Paul Smith, the renowned British designer, has joined forces with Artek, the esteemed Finnish furniture maker, to create a captivating collection that seamlessly blends the timeless design principles of both brands. The collaboration, aptly named “Artek Reimagined by Paul Smith,” showcases three of Artek’s most iconic pieces: Stool 60, Screen 100, and Coat Rack 109, each masterfully crafted in Finland with a playful twist from Paul Smith’s signature style.
As a long-time admirer of Artek founders Aino and Alvar Aalto’s work, Paul Smith has carefully infused his vibrant color palette and signature stripes into these classic designs, creating a bold new interpretation that stays true to the original pieces’ functionality, quality, and seamless craftsmanship. The collaboration is a testament to Paul Smith’s ability to find inspiration in everything, as he ventures beyond the status quo to bring a fresh perspective to timeless design.
The Stool 60, a fundamental and instantly recognizable piece of furniture, receives a playful update with Paul Smith’s cycling-inspired racing stripe. Available in four vibrant poppy hues and subtle varying wood stains across the seat and legs, the stool’s birch wood frame is elevated by this trademark design element, which comes in an impressive 40 different colors. A delightful surprise awaits beneath the seat, where an ultramarine blue paint, reminiscent of the hue used in Paul Smith’s suits, adds a quirky touch to an often-overlooked element.
Screen 100, the second piece in the collection, is a natural fit for Paul Smith’s signature stripe aesthetic. Constructed from narrow pine slats in varying shades, the screen effortlessly incorporates the designer’s iconic pattern. With two of Artek’s house finishes and three custom finishes created exclusively for Paul Smith, the muted pattern repeats across the design, resulting in a subdued and organic 70s-inspired finish.
Completing the collection is the revived Coat Rack 109, which takes its cue from the luggage racks found on steam trains. Featuring the same colorway as the screen and stool, this piece ties the collection together, offering a functional and ergonomic design with a subtle retro touch.
The Artek Reimagined by Paul Smith collection, set to launch on September 12, will be available online at paulsmith.com and in selected Paul Smith shops.
