OMEGA has revived one of its most iconic timepieces, bringing back “The First OMEGA in Space” with modern enhancements. This legendary watch, originally known as the CK 2998, has a rich history linked to space exploration that continues to captivate watch enthusiasts around the world.
The CK 2998 made its debut in 1959 as the second generation of the Speedmaster family. Its distinctive features included slender alpha hands, a symmetrical case, and a dark bezel that set it apart from its predecessor. These elements caught the eye of NASA astronaut Walter “Wally” Schirra, who personally purchased the watch and wore it during the Sigma 7 mission of the Mercury program on October 3, 1962. This historic moment earned the CK 2998 its famous nickname and cemented OMEGA’s place in the history of space exploration.
The new iteration of “The First OMEGA in Space” retains the classic 1959 design while incorporating modern technology. The watch features a 39.70 mm symmetrical case in brushed and polished stainless steel, paired with a black aluminum bezel ring that houses the essential tachymeter scale. True to its heritage, the bezel features the “dot over ninety” detail characteristic of early Speedmaster models.
Beneath a newly developed hesalite-like shaped sapphire crystal, the dial is CVD coated in a subtle gray-blue hue reminiscent of some 1960s CK 2998 models. The dial features hour markers and alpha hands filled with vintage Super-LumiNova, complemented by a white lacquered central seconds “baton” hand.
OMEGA has carefully preserved the historical significance of the watch by incorporating two vintage OMEGA logos on the dial and crown. The caseback features a seahorse medallion and engravings that pay homage to its space heritage.
While paying homage to the past, OMEGA has significantly improved the watch’s internal mechanics. The new models are powered by the Co-Axial Master Chronometer Caliber 3861, an evolution of the original Caliber 321. This modern movement offers superior precision, performance and magnetic resistance to meet today’s highest watchmaking standards.
Watch enthusiasts can choose from three versions of “The First OMEGA in Space”: two models with a black or brown leather strap with a buckle, and a third option with a full metal bracelet featuring “flat links” and OMEGA’s patented Comfort Release adjustment system.
Each timepiece comes in a special presentation box and is accompanied by an exclusive LEGENDARY MOONWATCH brochure, further emphasizing its historical significance.
