Studio Ghibli is a Japanese animation studio founded in 1985 by directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, and producer Toshio Suzuki. The studio’s name is derived from the Italian word for the hot Sahara wind, which was chosen by Miyazaki due to his passion for aircraft and the idea that the studio would “blow a new wind through the anime industry”. Studio Ghibli has produced 22 feature-length films, most of which have ranked number one at the box office in Japan in the year of their release. The studio is known for its enchanting storytelling and stunning visuals, and has become a creative and box office powerhouse, with five of its films among the highest-grossing anime feature films and five receiving Academy Award nominations.
