Amsterdam-based sneaker retailer Patta, which celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2024, is re-releasing its coveted collaboration with Nike: the Patta x Nike Air Max 1 Chlorophyll. This iconic shoe, originally released in 2009, marks a significant moment in the history of both brands and embodies their enduring partnership.
The re-released Air Max 1 Chlorophyll closely resembles the original, maintaining its classic design and colorway. The shoe features a white mesh base accented with gray nubuck overlays and denim details. The signature Chlorophyll colorway adorns the swoosh logos, mudguards, tongue labels, upper eyelets, and heel and toe brandings. A white midsole with visible Air units in the heel sits atop a white and black rubber outsole.
“The original Chlorophyll project was almost like a first album: There was a lot of energy, a lot of ideation in there, and the product was just very organic,” says Patta cofounder Guillaume “Gee” Schmidt. He emphasizes the timelessness of the design, stating, “With this release, we stick to the essence of the shoe, which really stands the test of time. It’s just an amazing moment to bring back a shoe that’s so coveted, that’s so loved by the sneaker community and the community at large.”
What sets this version apart are a few modern touches. While the designers meticulously replicated the original, even using the same fabric, there are subtle updates. The sock liner now features a €20 bill design, replacing the original Dutch guilder. Additionally, a custom box with chlorophyll accents commemorates Patta’s 20 year journey.
This collaboration is more than just a shoe release. It represents the deep-rooted partnership between Nike and Patta that extends beyond footwear and apparel. “We stick very close to who we are, and we make sure that in addition to great product, we also always have something to say,” Schmidt emphasizes. “Whether that is highlighting people we surround ourselves with, or a great narrative that we should shed light on for the world, it’s making sure that we support the new generation in a sufficient way. I think the key for us — and definitely in our collaborations with Nike — is that it’s always a bigger story. It’s always about more than product. And I think that’s our essence.”
Their partnership has resulted in over ten collaborations, including six Air Max 1 colorways, making Patta Nike’s longest-running and most influential Air Max collaborator. Beyond footwear, they have collaborated on projects such as the Nike x Patta Running Team capsule and the FC Barcelona x Patta collection. Nike is also a major sponsor of the Patta Academy, a testament to their shared vision of empowering future generations.
