Twenty-five years after its limited debut, the legendary Nike x Wu-Tang Clan Dunk makes a triumphant return. For sneaker enthusiasts and hip-hop aficionados alike, the news is monumental. The original 1999 release of the Wu-Tang Clan Dunk quickly became one of the most sought-after sneaker collaborations, revered for its rarity and cultural significance.
The reissued Dunk High retains the classic Black and Pollen colorway that reflects the original design. Crafted from premium leather, the sneaker features the iconic Wu-Tang Clan “W” logo embroidered on the tongue label and outer heel, a nod to the group’s enduring legacy. This collaboration celebrates the fusion of basketball, streetwear and hip-hop culture that both Nike and the Wu-Tang Clan have influenced over the decades.
RZA, leader of the Wu-Tang Clan, emphasized the significance of this release. “These Dunks represent not just footwear but a piece of our legacy,” he said. The group’s emergence from Staten Island in the early 1990s marked a seismic shift in hip-hop, blending gritty narratives with martial arts references and innovative beats. Its influence went beyond music, permeating fashion, film and art, and continues to inspire new generations worldwide.
Originally conceived as a basketball shoe and later adopted by skateboarders and streetwear enthusiasts, the Nike Dunk has become a staple of contemporary sneaker culture. This collaboration with the Wu-Tang Clan adds a significant chapter to its storied history. The sneaker not only pays homage to the past, but also bridges the gap between different cultures.
Method Man, another prominent member of the group, had previously called for the return of the sneaker in honor of the 25th anniversary of their debut album, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). Expressing his enthusiasm, he said, “I think the fans should let Nike know how much we need this shoe back.” His call resonated, and Nike responded by bringing the coveted sneaker back to the public.
The Nike x Wu-Tang Clan Dunk is set for a global release on November 9th and will be available on the SNKRS app and at select retailers for $150.
