Google is preparing to launch its next streaming player, the Google TV Streamer, which marks a significant departure from the compact dongle form factor of previous Chromecast devices. The new set-top box features a sleek, pill-shaped design that sits underneath your TV, connected via power and HDMI cables.
Images shared with 9to5Google reveal the Google TV Streamer’s unique aesthetic, which aligns with the company’s recent hardware offerings. The device has a slanted top surface, giving it a modern and minimalist appearance. This design choice could potentially enable advanced features like Ultra Wideband-powered Tap to Cast, which was announced earlier this year for the Pixel Tablet.
Accompanying the Google TV Streamer is a redesigned remote control. While similar to the previous Chromecast remote, the new version is longer and includes a volume rocker on its face for easy access. The voice input key has been rebranded with a generic microphone icon, reflecting the changing landscape of virtual assistants. Dedicated buttons for YouTube, Netflix, power, and a “Magic” shortcut round out the remote’s features.
The rebranding extends beyond the hardware design, as Google has chosen to drop the “Chromecast” moniker in favor of “Google TV Streamer.” This change follows the company’s recent decision to replace “Chromecast built-in” with “Google Cast” earlier this year.
As consumers eagerly await the Google TV Streamer’s debut, speculation mounts regarding its performance capabilities. Many hope that the device will offer a more powerful streaming experience, rivaling the likes of the Apple TV 4K and Nvidia Shield. However, it remains to be seen whether Google will prioritize high-end specs or maintain its traditional sub-$100 price point to appeal to a broader audience.
The Google TV Streamer is expected to be unveiled at the company’s upcoming hardware event on August 13th, alongside a host of other highly anticipated products such as the Pixel 9 series smartphones, Pixel Fold, and Pixel Watch 3 models.
