The Austrian design firm VAGABUND, known for its inventive motorcycle customizations, has partnered with BMW Motorrad Austria to reimagine the BMW CE 02 electric urban scooter. This collaboration, born from a shared admiration for the CE 02’s unique design, has birthed a retro-futuristic marvel dubbed the BMW CE 02 x VAGABUND.
Paul Brauchart, the founder and managing director of VAGABUND, articulated his company’s instant attraction to the BMW CE 02: “We were immediately in love when we saw the CE 02 for the first time at the BMW Motorrad Days in Berlin. The overall design of the CE 02 was simply a “perfect match” for us, as we at VAGABUND are always trying to break new ground and reinterpret existing products in our own way.” Brauchart further elaborated on their design ethos, stating, “In this project, we would define the general design approach as a “retro-future.” We tried to combine the very futuristic original design with some retro vibes and thus give the viewer a familiar feeling.”
This “retro-future” aesthetic manifests in several clever ways throughout the BMW CE 02 x VAGABUND. The integration of a “Teenage Engineering OB-4 Magic Radio” caters to a younger demographic, while the unconventional “electric exhaust” – designed to house an umbrella – adds a touch of practicality and visual intrigue. Furthermore, the inclusion of a running board with skateboard grip tape amplifies the bike’s urban, sporty appeal.

The BMW CE 02 x VAGABUND retains the core performance specifications of the standard model. Powering the bike is a 48-volt electric motor, sourced from BMW’s automotive division, capable of generating a peak output of 11 kW (15 hp). This allows the CE 02 to achieve a top speed of 59 mph and provides a range of approximately 55 miles. Recharging is accomplished via standard household outlets, though the lack of compatibility with Type 1 or Type 2 charging stations might pose a limitation for some urban riders.
