The iconic BMW M5 has undergone a dramatic transformation for 2025, embracing electrification while clinging firmly to its performance heritage. This is a paradigm shift for the legendary high-performance sedan.
The most notable change lies under the hood, or rather, beneath the floorboards. The 2025 BMW M5 ditches its solely gasoline-powered heart for a pulsating new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain christened the M Hybrid. This innovative system combines a familiar 4.4-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 with a potent electric motor integrated into the eight-speed automatic transmission. The result? A staggering 717 horsepower and a gut-wrenching 738 pound-feet of torque, propelling the M5 from 0 to 60 mph in a scant 3.4 seconds.
Gone are the days of range anxiety for the performance-minded driver. The M5’s 14.8-kWh battery offers an estimated 25 miles of electric-only range, perfect for emissions-free commutes or navigating city streets silently. And when the battery depletes, a standard 7.4-kilowatt onboard charger makes refueling at home a breeze with a Level 2 setup.
Of course, embracing electrification comes with a weight penalty. The 2025 BMW M5 tips the scales at a hefty 5,390 pounds, a significant increase from the previous generation. But before you scoff, consider this: the M5’s German rivals face a similar dilemma. The Porsche Panamera Turbo E-Hybrid and the Audi RS 6 and RS 7 are no lightweight champions either. Thankfully, for a car designed to devour racetracks, weight doesn’t necessarily equate to sluggishness.
To address handling concerns, BMW equips the M5 with a bespoke suspension setup. The familiar double-wishbone front and five-link rear configuration might seem standard, but M-specific adaptive dampers and lightweight suspension components promise a sharper, more responsive driving experience. And to ensure this high-powered beast comes to a halt with authority, massive 285/40ZR20 front tires and even meatier 295/35ZR21 rear rubber provide ample grip, while six-piston front and single-piston rear calipers deliver serious stopping power.
Step inside the 2025 BMW M5’s cabin, and you’ll find a familiar yet modernized environment. The sleek, curved dashboard houses a stunning 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a large 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, both carried over from the new 5 Series. M-specific touches abound, with a unique steering wheel, center console, and control panel adding a touch of sporty flair. Customization options allow drivers to tailor the interior to their preferences, creating a truly personalized driving environment.
The 2025 BMW M5 is slated to arrive in dealerships this fall with a starting price of $120,675.
