Nike SB prepares to launch its officially licensed The Wizard of Oz collaboration. This new release sets to hit shelves during the holiday season of 2024.
At the heart of this collaboration is the Nike SB Dunk Low, drawing inspiration from one of the most iconic pairs of shoes in film history – Dorothy’s ruby slippers. The sneaker’s design is said to feature a “Gym Red/Multi-Color/University Red” colorway, potentially incorporating shimmering materials to mimic the dazzling effect of the original ruby slippers.
While the ruby red hue takes center stage, the sneaker’s design goes beyond a simple color homage. The upper is rumored to showcase a psychedelic-like floral pattern, reminiscent of the movie’s famous poppy field scene.
True fans of The Wizard of Oz will appreciate the thoughtful touches incorporated into the design. The heel of the sneaker is said to feature the film’s famous tagline, “there’s no place like home“, stitched into the fabric Additionally, the tongue is expected to proudly display the official The Wizard of Oz logo, cementing the collaboration’s authenticity.
Interestingly, this isn’t Nike SB’s first foray into Oz-inspired designs. In 2015, the brand released an unofficial The Wizard of Oz pack, featuring three sneakers themed around Dorothy, the ruby slippers, and the “Tin Man.” However, this new collaboration marks the first time Nike has secured official licensing for the iconic film property.
The original ruby slippers from the 1939 film have a fascinating history of their own. Created by MGM Studios’ chief costume designer, Gilbert Adrian, the shoes were adorned with an astounding 2,300 red sequins. Over the years, these iconic shoes have become cultural artifacts, with one pair undergoing a $300,000 renovation and another selling at auction for a staggering $666,000.
