Maison MIHARA YASUHIRO‘s Spring 2025 collection is a captivating exploration of the concept of persona, drawing inspiration from designer Mihara Yasuhiro’s childhood influences and his own child’s developing personality. The collection delves into the complexities of human identity, questioning what truly defines us in an era where even artificial intelligence possesses a distinct personality.
Mihara’s designs showcase the instability of the human condition through unconventional and thought-provoking pieces. Jeans with missing backs expose bare skin, while extra legs protrude from the front, creating the illusion of clothing being stuck onto the body rather than worn. Oversized shirts and jackets evoke a sense of childlike vulnerability, hidden beneath the brand’s signature cool-kid edginess.
The runway show took an unexpected turn as planted audience members burst into karaoke performances, transforming the Salle Wagram into a lively British pub atmosphere. The joyous singing and silver confetti raining down from the rafters temporarily stole the spotlight from the collection, but the clothes themselves were undeniably worthy of attention.
Mihara Yasuhiro’s designs featured triple-layered zippers on MA-1 bombers, super-cropped souvenir jackets, and new iterations of the brand’s popular melted-sole sneakers. The nostalgic desire to return to childhood was evident in the star and heart stickers adorning grungy sweatpants, jeans, and chore jackets, as well as the playful accessories shaped like dinosaurs, teddy bears, rubber ducks, and bananas.
The collection seamlessly blended good fun with profound statements about the act of wearing clothes and the expression of one’s true self. The intermittent pauses between karaoke songs, filled with foreboding music, created a sense of impending darkness, only to be kept at bay by the next tune. In the face of life’s challenges, Mihara’s collection suggests that sometimes all we can do is sing along and embrace the joy of the moment.
