Glenn Martens, the creative mastermind behind Y/Project, has announced his departure from the label after an impressive 11-year tenure. This move marks the end of an era for one of Paris’ most innovative and celebrated fashion houses. Martens, a graduate of Antwerp’s prestigious Royal Academy, is renowned for his groundbreaking approach to pattern-making, transforming everyday staples like blue jeans and blazers into avant-garde statements with details such as asymmetrical waistlines and zig-zagged pleats.
At Y/Project, Martens’ visionary designs made customizable garments that could be styled in multiple ways, earning the brand global recognition and a cult following. The label became a favorite among celebrities, dressing the likes of Rihanna and Charli XCX, and remained a highlight of Paris Fashion Week even a decade into Martens’ tenure. Y/Project’s success was solidified when it won France’s highest fashion accolade, the ANDAM prize, in both 2017 and 2020.
Martens’ influence extended beyond Y/Project when he took on the role of creative director at Diesel in 2020, juggling his responsibilities while continuing to helm Y/Project. His departure comes amidst uncertainty for the label, which sat out Paris Fashion Week in March, citing market instability. Pascal Conté-Jodra, who joined Y/Project as CEO in May 2023, has also left the company as of July 2024, according to his LinkedIn profile.
Martens’ journey at Y/Project was marked by significant personal and professional milestones. He was appointed to lead the brand following the tragic passing of its co-founder and initial designer, Yohan Serfaty, in 2013. This June, another co-founder and owner, Gilles Elelalouf, died at the age of 58 after a long illness. Despite these challenges, Martens’ creative genius has left an indelible mark on the fashion industry.
“Glenn Martens has redefined the boundaries of fashion with his innovative approach to design,” said a fashion industry insider. “His work at Y/Project will be remembered for its unique blend of creativity and wearability.“
As Glenn Martens prepares to show his latest collection for Diesel during Milan Fashion Week on September 21, the future of Y/Project remains uncertain. However, the legacy of Martens’ groundbreaking work will continue to inspire and influence the fashion world for years to come.
