BMW M GmbH unveils the new BMW M5, marking a significant milestone in the iconic model’s history. This seventh-generation high-performance sedan, now rolling off the assembly line at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing, introduces an electrified drivetrain that promises to redefine the segment.
At the heart of the new BMW M5 lies a revolutionary M HYBRID system, marrying a potent V8 engine with an advanced e-drive. This powerhouse combination delivers an impressive 727 horsepower, catapulting the vehicle from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere 3.5 seconds. But raw power isn’t the only ace up its sleeve.
The M5’s high-voltage battery boasts an energy content of 18.6 kWh, providing an electric range of 67 to 69 kilometers (WLTP) – a feature that sets it apart from its competitors. This blend of performance and efficiency showcases BMW‘s commitment to evolving with the times while maintaining the M5’s performance pedigree.
Christoph Schröder, Plant Director at Dingolfing, expressed pride in the facility’s role: “We are proud to be building the latest generation of the iconic M5 here in Dingolfing.” The plant’s history with the M5 dates back to the 1980s when it supplied pre-assembled bodies for the first models.
The production process for the new M5 exemplifies BMW’s “under one roof” approach. Key components, including the specially tailored chassis and high-voltage battery, are manufactured on-site or sourced from nearby facilities. The carbon-fiber roof, a hallmark of M vehicles, comes from the Landshut plant just 30 kilometers away.
Attention to detail is evident throughout the production process. The body shop makes specific modifications to the standard 5 Series body, including structural stiffening and widened wheel arches to accommodate the M-specific rear axle. In the paint shop, customers can choose from an extensive palette of 10 standard and 150 special-request finishes, ensuring each M5 can be as unique as its owner.
The assembly line, shared with other BMW models, sees the BMW M5 receiving its distinctive touches. These include the CFRP rear spoiler, M steering wheel, and M multifunction seats – elements that contribute to the vehicle’s performance-focused character.
As production ramps up to several dozen units per day, anticipation builds for the European market launch scheduled for November 2, 2024. But the excitement doesn’t end there – BMW has already teased the upcoming M5 Touring, set to expand the M GmbH lineup and complete the new 5 Series range.
