Dingyun Zhang, the pioneering Chinese designer, has once again partnered with adidas Originals to introduce the adidas Kouza – a sneaker that boldly pushes the boundaries of style and functionality. Following the debut of their collaboration with the Dingyun Zhang Samba earlier this year, this new release continues to push the boundaries of innovative footwear design.
The adidas Kouza blends durability, mobility and breathability into a silhouette that defies traditional conventions. Named after an East Asian ornamental plant known for its seasonal transformations, the Kouza embodies the essence of change and evolution. An exaggerated heel guard stands out as a signature element, subtly reflecting motifs found throughout Zhang’s work. The extended outsole and taped seams create a dynamic interplay between the mesh upper and rubber outsole, offering both aesthetic appeal and enhanced durability.
This design takes inspiration from the adidas Beijing 2008 Boxing Boot, connecting the sneaker to a rich lineage of athletic footwear while introducing contemporary innovations. The fusion of tradition and modernity pays homage to Zhang’s heritage, embedding cultural significance into the very fabric of the shoe.
“I am fascinated by the concept of transformation and the idea that things are not always what they seem,” said Zhang. “The adidas Kouza captures the delicate balance between form and function while exuding elegance and style.“
In addition to the Kouza, the collaboration introduces two fresh iterations of the Dingyun Zhang Samba. These versions reimagine the classic silhouette in luxurious suede, infusing it with new life and character. One features a tonal gray palette that evokes a sense of understated sophistication. The other features a rich brown upper contrasted with a vibrant orange tongue, laces and crisp white heel tab. Both designs are inspired by the color palettes of abstract modernist art, adding depth and a contemporary edge to the timeless style.
This capsule collection underscores adidas Originals’ and Dingyun Zhang’s ongoing commitment to exploring the intersection of art, culture and athleticism in footwear. By challenging traditional design norms and embracing innovative concepts, they deliver products that resonate deeply with enthusiasts passionate about sneakers and style.
The latest collection will launch on October 18th at select retailers and via the adidas CONFIRMED app.
