In a bold move, ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, has launched a new AI video app, Jimeng AI, which allows users to generate videos based on text prompts. This development comes hot on the heels of OpenAI’s announcement of its text-to-video model, Sora, in February. With Jimeng AI, ByteDance is poised to take on OpenAI in the emerging market of AI-generated video content.
Jimeng AI, developed by ByteDance-owned Faceu Technology, is now available on the Apple App Store for Chinese users, following its release on Android on July 31. The app offers subscriptions at 69 yuan ($9.65) monthly, 79 yuan for a single month, or 659 yuan annually, allowing users to create approximately 2,050 images or 168 AI videos per month.
The launch of Jimeng AI marks a significant milestone in the development of AI-generated video content. With its cutting-edge technology, ByteDance is well-positioned to compete with OpenAI’s Sora, which is not yet open for public use. The move also underscores the growing interest in AI-generated content, with several Chinese tech firms, including Kuaishou and Zhipu AI, launching similar models in recent months.
As the AI video app market continues to heat up, it will be interesting to see how ByteDance’s Jimeng AI fares against OpenAI’s Sora. With its strong track record in developing innovative AI-powered products, ByteDance is certainly a force to be reckoned with in this emerging market.
